Reading Between The Lines: Faith And Music

Michelle Branch has been a household name since the turn of the century. A Grammy Award winner for “The Game Of Love” and an MTV Video Music Award winner for “Everywhere,” a song that has caused debate among internet users about it’s relation to faith and God.

A debate that is given some extra credence when you look into a different song of Branch’s, “All You Wanted,” that we’re going to examine today.

It is said that the very beginning is a very good place to start, however, I have found that the best part to start is actually the chorus, so let’s take a look:

“If you want to, I can save you, I can take you away from here. So lonely inside, so busy out there, and all you wanted was somebody who cares.”

We know that Jesus died to save us all. It us up to us about whether we want to accept His saving us and try to live a Godly life, or reject it and live a not so Godly life. “I can take you away from here.” We as Christians know that this isn’t our true home, it is just a temporary home. Our real home is Heaven, which is where He takes us when we are finished on Earth, provided we lived our lives in a way that is right, or repent. As for the lonely part, there are times where we all feel alone, despite knowing that God is always with us.

Now for the “busy” aspect. We are consistently busy in our lives, sometimes to the point where we do not take time to pray or make it to Church. The last line of the chorus says, “all you wanted was somebody who cares.” Don’t we all want someone who cares? Well we often forget that we always have someone who cares. God cares so much He sent His only Son to die for us so we can be saved. Jesus cares so much he underwent suffering and died on the cross for us.

Let’s take a look at the first verse real quick:

“I wanted to be like you. I wanted everything. So I tried to be like you, and I got swept away. I didn’t know that it was so cold and you needed someone to show you the way. So I took your hand and we figured out that when the time comes, I’d take you away.”

We, as Christians, want to be as similar to Jesus as we can. We try so hard to be like Him in His words and actions, yet we fail, or get “swept away”. Ever owned a GPS? What does that do? It shows you the way to where you’re going. We all get lost at times and need help, but we know that God is always there to help lead us in the right direction.

Now it is time for a look at the second verse:

“I’m sinking slowly, so hurry hold me. Your hand is all I have to keep me hanging on. Please can you tell me, so I can finally see, where you go when you’re gone?”

We all fall at times. It is going to happen. However, God will catch us every time we fall, and help us get back up. Now, I am sure most of us have asked the question: what will happen to me when I die? We wonder if we will really get to Heaven or not at times. If you’re like me, you’ve probably asked God that exact question.

We don’t realize the Christian connections in the songs we listen to, unless we try to. What are some songs you listen to a lot? When you’re listening to them, see if you can find some Christian connections in them like I just found in “All You Wanted” by Michelle Branch.
