An NFL Coaching Carousel Rundown

The NFL coaching carousel continues to roll round and round. As per tradition, the Monday following the final regular season contest, football organizations take a five minute stock of their franchise and usually four or five decide to move in another direction by firing their head coach.

This was the case this year as the Browns, Lions, Redskins, Vikings, Texans and Buccaneers all parted ways with their respective leaders.

General Managers usually aren’t too safe either. Just this week the Miami Dolphins showed GM Jeff Ireland the door after six seasons.

Here’s a look at the current coaching situations for teams around the league:

CLEVELAND BROWNS

Arizona defensive coordinator Todd Bowles and Seattle offensive coordinator Dan Quinn. The organization was interested in Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops and New England offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels but those were both quelled earlier this week. Packers’ quarterbacks coach Ben McAdoo — who’s contract has expired with Green Bay — is also expected to get an interview this week.

MINNESOTA VIKINGS

The Vikings are sparing no expense to find their next head coach as they are flying in NFL coordinators from around the country. Dan Quinn (Seahawks) has already interviewed for the job and Browns’ defensive coordinator Ray Horton will later this week. Minnesota has inquired about speaking with Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden and defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer. Denver offensive coordinator Adam Gase is on the list but told NFL.com he won’t speak to any teams until the Broncos are out of the playoffs.

TENNESSEE TITANS

Jay Gruden has already interviewed in Nashville and the organization will speak with Ravens’ offensive coordinator Jim Caldwell by week’s end. Chargers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt and Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell are on the list.

WASHINGTON REDSKINS

The Redskins have interviewed three already including Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell, Ravens offensive coordinator Jim Caldwell and Dallas special teams coach Rich Bisaccia. Ken Whisenhunt and Jay Gruden are also on the list along with Carolina defensive coordinator Sean McDermott, 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. An outside shot for this or the Tennessee job is Vanderbilt head coach James Franklin.

DETROIT LIONS

Former Titans head coach Mike Munchak and former Texans coach Gary Kubiak will or have already interviewed with the Lions. Ken Whisenhunt, Jim Caldwell and Jay Gruden are also on the interview list.

TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS

The Bucs turned their opening around quickly and hired Lovie Smith — former Chicago Bears head coach — in fast order.

HOUSTON TEXANS

So much for staying in Happy Valley. Just two years after turning around a program rife with external issues, Penn State head coach Bill O’Brien was named the new coach.

Additionally, on Tuesday NFL.com reported Oakland Raiders head coach Dennis Allen will return as the head coach next season. Rex Ryan (Jets), Jason Garrett (Cowboys), Tom Coughlin (Giants) and Joe Philbin (Dolphins) are all also returning to their respective positions next season.

NFL.com contributed to this report.

I have been a journalist for the last 20 years. Don't start guessing my age because I started very early in life. I have covered sports and politics over the course of that time. Currently, I am the editor of a mid-sized paper in North Carolina, which is a far cry from my hometown in Kansas (please keep the "you aren't in Kansas anymore" references to a bare minimum).
