‘Heathers’ Musical Coming To Off Broadway In March

Say what?!

The cult classic “Heathers” that made us giggle and squirm with teen murders and petite games of croquet will be opening a musical Off Broadway beginning this March.

The premiere of ‘Heathers: The Musical’ opened earlier this year in Los Angeles with a sold-out audience, which gave enticing hope for the future of the musical adaptation. With music and lyrics by Laurence O’Keefe (Legally Blonde) and Kevin Murphy (Reefer Madness), this sounds like a performance that will have its audience begging for an extravagant show of hysterical darkness.

Heathers is known as one of the most influential teen flicks of all time. It was the start of witty comedies for teenagers that was followed by others, including Jawbreaker, Mean Girls and Juno.

The clever story revolves around Veronica Sawyer, played by Winona Ryder, who hangs out with a popular clique of three girls all named Heather. Veronica is a rebellious outsider who just doesn’t fit in with the “it crowd.” But then dangerous newcomer J.D., played by a once well-known Christian Slater, comes into Veronica’s life where the two team up to see how they can get back at the popular crowd. It turns out that Veronica gets a little too involved with the fun of revenge when her intentions of scaring people turns into accidental deaths falling in her hands.

As creepy as this plot sounds, the movie is actually a dark comedy. Students, teachers and parents have odd reactions to the teenagers’ deaths, including an emotional shout-out of a jock’s assumed homosexuality at his funeral made by his father. In fact, this scene gets its own song in the musical version.

With an insane story, witty dialogue and some of the craziest action you’ll ever find, a musical will definitely be something to look forward to. All of Veronica’s awesome diary entrees and listening to each Heather swear (“do what with a chainsaw?!“) is a total riot. As of now, some can only wonder if there will be a song about corn nuts; watching that moment in the movie was wild enough, but to see it with theatrical singing and dancing creates massive anticipation for a sensational show.

Winona Ryder’s agent must be kicking himself for trying to convince the actress to step out of this movie.
