If you’ve ever watched Spider-Man, released in 2002 with Tobey Maguire portraying Peter Parker aka Spider-Man, you’ve heard the song “Hero” by Chad Kroeger. Note how I said Chad Kroeger and not Nickelback, as this wasn’t a Nickelback song, rather Kroeger, the lead singer of Nickelback, did it with artists from other bands. If you read the title of this post, you may be wondering what that song has to do with faith and/or Christianity. Allow me to show you.
One of the first things I listen to when I listen to music is the chorus, because if I don’t like the chorus, I usually won’t like the song. Let’s take a look at the chorus first:
“And they say that a hero can save us, I’m not gonna stand here and wait. I’ll hold onto the wings of the eagles, watch as we all fly away.”
We all know who the hero that can save us is: Jesus. That’s right in our faces. However, there is another reference to Christianity there that flies under the radar. “I’ll hold onto the wings of the eagles.” Doesn’t that sound familiar? It reminds me of Isaiah 40:31, which says “But those that wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings as eagles.” Take a look at the chorus without a Christian basis and the eagles part doesn’t make much sense, but add in Isaiah 40:31, and it does considering he said right before he doesn’t want to wait for a hero of his own.
Let’s take a look at the second verse now.
“Someone told me that love would all save us. But how can that be? Look what love gave us: A world full of killing, and blood-spilling, that world never came.”
We, as Christians, know that God’s love for us did save us, for He sent Jesus to die for us, which He did out of love, so we could be saved. Now, some may be wondering, so how does the love giving us killings make sense? That goes all the way back to the beginning of our faith. God created humans and gave them free will. If you love someone, you are supposed to let them go. God loved us so much even from the beginning, He “let us go”, He gave us the free will to choose what we want to do. This ultimately helped lead to original sin, and every sin after that, which is a choice, including all the deception, wars, and killings.
There are many songs that have connections to the Christian faith that many of us, regardless of where our faith may lie, never even realize. Take an opportunity to listen to music a bit closer and see if you can see them too.
